Regulated activity

Virginia public adjusting includes soliciting, investigating, negotiating, adjusting, or advising a policyholder about a first-party claim under insurance covering the policyholder's real or personal property for the purpose of settlement. Advertising or representing oneself as a public adjuster is included. The 2026 definition of negotiate expressly reaches investigation, evaluation, advice, claim preparation, advocacy, and settlement assistance. Intake should identify the client, policy, property, services, compensation, and who will perform every substantive task before a file is accepted.

Course takeaway: Virginia regulates compensated first-party property claim advocacy and tests it through a 50-scoreable-question resident examination.
