Controlling authority

New Hampshire public adjusting is insured-side first-party work under fire and homeowners policies. Start intake by identifying the policy type, represented party, and compensated activity. A broad property background or an insurer-adjuster title does not establish authority to negotiate for an insured. Chapter 402-D narrows that role further to losses under fire and homeowners policies. At intake, obtain the declarations and identify whether the assignment is a first-party claim by the insured. A request to defend a liability claim or adjust for the carrier belongs outside this authority. Advertising counts as holding out, so the license check precedes a website launch, signed engagement, or negotiation call.

Course takeaway: First-party claims. Fire insurance and homeowners insurance policies. The person must hold a New Hampshire public-adjuster license unless a specific exemption applies.
