Read a sample: Mississippi public-adjuster role and examination
A regulated insured-side role
Mississippi regulates a public adjuster as a person who, for compensation or another thing of value and on behalf of an insured, works with a first-party claim for loss or damage to real or personal property. The work can include negotiating or effecting a settlement. The definition also reaches advertising, soliciting business, investigating, adjusting, advising, or assisting another public adjuster with such a claim. A business card or online advertisement can therefore matter before a person touches an estimate. The client is the insured; an insurer employee or insurer-retained independent adjuster serves a different principal. The property and first-party limits are equally important. A bodily-injury claimant demanding damages from another driver is not converted into a public-adjusting client merely because insurance will fund a payment.
Course takeaway: Mississippi regulates a public adjuster as a person who, for compensation or another thing of value and on behalf of an insured, works with a first-party claim for loss or damage to real or personal property. Mississippi currently issues public-adjuster licenses and maintains an official Public Adjuster examination outline. The practice examination contains one hundred questions because it doubles each official outline count: sixteen Auto, two Businessowners, four Commercial Property, twenty-four Dwelling/Homeowners/Other, twelve General Concepts, six Liability, twelve Property and Casualty Overview, twenty-two State Law, and two Workers’ Compensation. Begin each engagement by naming the claimant, policy, property, cause of loss, requested service, and person paying for the work.
