Read a sample: Florida public-adjuster roles and licensing

Start with the client represented

Florida classifies adjusters by whom they represent. A public adjuster acts for an insured or eligible third-party claimant for compensation in preparing, filing, investigating, negotiating, or settling a property claim. Advertising or soliciting that work can itself bring a person within the statutory definition. By contrast, a company employee adjuster acts for one insurer, while an independent adjuster handles insurer assignments as an independent contractor. The label on a business card does not control; the services performed and the party represented do. A person who only photographs or inventories damaged property is outside the public-adjuster definition if the person does not also solicit, investigate, adjust, or negotiate the claim. [Florida Statutes §626.854(1)-(4)]

Course takeaway: A Florida public adjuster represents an insured or eligible claimant for value; the role, license, appointment, bond, and scope must all align.
